Worse Than Love Canal

The Love Canal in Niagara Falls, N.Y., is one of the most appalling environmental tragedies in American history.

But Phil Kaufman, a longtime outspoken critic of the dumping of hazardous and toxic waste in this section of the anthracite region, said the horrors of the Love Canal are a far-distant second to what's been happening right under our noses.

"Actually, the Love Canal is baby's play compared to Greater Hazleton," remarked Kaufman.. "I'd conservatively estimate that our problem is a thousand times worse"
